Djibouti, in the west of Africa, is one of the world’s smallest countries (ranked 150th in terms of land mass), and is also one of the least populated countries in the world with a population of slightly over 810,000. Until 1977, Djibouti was a colony of France (known as French Somaliland), after three votes over the span of 19 years. As well as a rich culture that has more than a hint of French heritage, Djibouti’s culture is very similar to that of neighboring Somalia. Given the intertwined histories of both these countries, it is no surprise to see such influences. Djibouti is a member of the African Nations, as well as the United Nations. If the tourism industry continues to grow in the manner that is has done over the past decade or so, it will not be long until more money is pumped into developing hotels and casinos to rival the Sheraton and the Aden Bay Casino.
