Comoros is a tiny island national which can be found in the Indian Ocean, off the East Coast of Africa. Comoros is made up of several island, with four principle islands – Anjouan, Grande Comore, Mayotte, and Moheli, although Mayotte’s ‘ownership’ is under dispute and it is still governed by the French. It has a population just shy of 800,000, and a land mass of 1,862 square kilometers. The capital city, Morone, can be found on Grande Comore, at the foot of Mount Karthala, which is an active volcano. Comoros is one of the smallest and poorest countries in the world, and that is reflected in the poor infrastructure and transport links. The economy does not have much in the way of exports, and it is difficult for Comoros to have trade links due to its location. The country also lacks much in the way of natural resources, which has also caused a lot of problems for the country.

However, even though there is little in the way of money to be spared on the island, and the fact that the tourist economy is not exactly flourishing in Comoros, there is still one casinos on the island if Grande Comore. There was, at one point, two casinos, but the Le Galawa Beach Resort and Casino closed towards the end of 2007 due to the poor performance industry. Which leaves Itsandra Hotel and Casino as the biggest casino in Comoros, as well as being the only casino in Comoros. It is located in the small beach resort of Itsandra to the north of Grande Comore, which is perhaps most famous for the ruins of the Sultan’s Fort and Palace from the 15th Century.

The Itsandra Hotel and Casino is a small, secluded resort on Itsandra beach, which has 21 guest rooms in addition to the casino. The resort also has its own private section of the beach for guests to use away from the masses – or at least what masses there could potentially be. Given the flagging tourist industry in Comoros, you might not have to worry about your privacy too much.

The casino itself is biggest than some you will find elsewhere on the mainland of Africa, with a variety of slot machines for players to play, as well as table games – roulette, and blackjack. In fact, when compared to other African casinos, the Itsandra Hotel and Casino is on another level completely simply by the fact it offers two table games. However, while the slot machines are open from 2pm until 2am every day, the tables games are only open twice a week from 9pm until 2am. And you should not be expecting any preferential treatment if you are a high-roller – with so few tables, everyone is equal at the Itsandra Hotel and Casino.

The resort also has two restaurants – the main hotel restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, and also the Garden Restaurant overlooking the Indian Ocean which is open from midday until 5pm. The only other real facility on offer at the Itsandra Hotel and Casino is the snorkeling facilities, letting you explore the depths of the Indian Ocean.

What should be remembered is that if you are visiting Comoros, you are visiting an extremely poor country which should be making the most of its beaches and stunning surroundings. However, due to lack of investment across the entire country, the tourism industry has not flourished in a way that it should have. So the Itsandra Hotel and Casino is a bit of an anomaly, especially when you take into account that nearly all of its business will be from the tourists spending time on Grande Comore, given the fact that it has managed to outlast its main competitor, Le Galawa Beach Resort and Casino.

There is no denying that Comoros is a beautiful, tropical country, and with the right investment it could be a special place for visitors, but until that investment comes, the Itsandra Hotel and Casino has no need to expand its hotel or casino. But then, when you have a beautiful beach and the Indian Ocean in front of you, maybe the last thing you want to be doing is spending all your time tucked away in a dark casino.
