Dolphins1925 was a poster on the very popular website Reddit. From Elimination Chamber in 2013 all the way through to TLC later that year, he had been able to accurately predict the results of approximately 98% of all WWE PPVs.
The only result up for debate was where he picked John Cena to win in the Cena vs Ryback match at Extreme Rules. That match ended in a no contest/draw. He posted on reddit with his opinion that the match was not a win OR a loss for Cena – so in his opinion that result should be considered a “push” – much like if you bet the Patriots to win -7, and they win by exactly 7.
It wasn’t until Money in the Bank where people really took notice, and the media started picking up on the story. The reason for this is Dolphins1925 picking the two Money in the Bank winners, Damien Sandow and Randy Orton. Both would be complete outsiders to the wrestling fan in terms of winning.
However it should be noted that both these picks were obvious – going into Money in the Bank, both Orton and Sandow were favourites to win their respective matches. Sandow was -140 and Orton was -190. As long as you pay attention to the sports betting lines and wrestling odds – you’ll usually know who is going to win.
The biggest theory initially was that someone high up in WWE was leaking the results to Dolphins1925, or that he was actually connected to the small WWE circle that knows the results beforehand in some manner. Many theorized that he was actually a WWE staff member.
Unfortunately, the answer to this and the big secret behind it all is actually rather disappointing.
At the time of Dolphins1925 posting, wrestling betting was in its infancy. The only online sportsbook that really did it at the time was 5Dimes, as opposed to these days where you have so many sportsbooks such as Bovada offering wrestling betting odds.
There WERE people who found out the results beforehand. However, rather than leaking the odds to Dolphins1925, they were simply going to 5Dimes and placing the bets on the wrestlers that would win.
Dolphins1925 simply monitored the odds, and when they changed a couple of hours prior to the show, he knew that the “smart money”, as it is referred to, was in. This is employees who actually know the results of the upcoming matches placing max bets. 5Dimes would take a +150 underdog and make them a -800 favourite or something similar, indicating that they had taken max bets on that wrestler.
Dolphins1925 simply monitored this and an hour before each show, would post the results.
So he wasn’t a mole in any way or had any connections; he simply monitored the sportsbooks, saw the odds switch, and made his “spoiler” posts based on that.
As wrestling betting evolved, things got trickier. There was one PPV where he got multiple results wrong and the community turned on him and he stopped posting on reddit.
