Who is Steve Fezzik?

Steve Fezzik is a famous professional bettor and handicapper. His picks, which he publishes through a number of outlets including internet and radio have earned him minor celebrity status among serious sports gamblers in Vegas. Like many in his profession, Fezzik divides opinion and has had to ward off controversy after controversy during his career.

How did Fezzik Rise to Prominence

Fezzik was born in 1962 in Dayton, Ohio. He always had a knack for mathematics and picked up a love for sports gambling when he was in college. These two qualities would be key ingredients to his success in later years. He graduated from Northwestern University in 1986 and went on to become a successful actuary and statistician in the insurance industry. Despite rising to vice president position at Transamerica Asset Management by 2001, he decided to give it all up to concentrate on gambling full time. That same year, he left Los Angeles and moved to Las Vegas where there were virtually no legal restrictions on sports betting. Initially, Fezzik sought anonymity seeing as he was quickly banned from one casino for winning too much. However his winnings brought him fame without having to work too hard. He won the Hilton Supercontest back to back in 2008 and 2009, the only person ever to do that, affording him even more publicity.

Fezzik claims to use his knowledge of statistics to take advantage of betting lines that appear askew, rather than depending on actual knowledge of the games he bets on. This strategy does not depend on the outcome of the game but on minor details like the score at half time and combined total points from a game. Fezzik knows that betting lines do not depend on the oddsmakers’ opinion of which team will win or by how many points but a numerical balance where the casinos believe they can equal bet volumes on each side of the proposition. This way, the house is guaranteed to win since it collects enough money from one side to pay the other and leave a handsome profit. Serious bettors like Fezzik understand this and try to devise a formula to exploit it, which is manipulated by changing the size of bets. Some opportunistic hits can also be a pot of gold for gamblers with the eye for it. For example during Hurricane Katrina, Fezzik noticed that bookmakers were yet to adjust their lines on how many games the New Orleans Saints win during the NFL season. He and his betting partners rushed to bookmakers to place their bets to take advantage of the oversight. With the Saints forced to play away in order to accommodate evacuees at the Superdome, they won only three games rather than the seven that bookmakers had on proposition.

In 2014 he teamed up with RJ Bell, the owner of Pregame.com and created a marketing campaign to sell picks to the general public. Despite the tremendous gambling success that Fezzik’s legend claims, it is said that the true proportions of his winnings is exaggerated by a huge margin. In fact many reports claim that he only got into the business of selling picks because he was bankrupt from his losses.
