In another article, we touched on how to win at roulette and we came to the conclusion that there are no systems that can guarantee a win. So, does that mean you can’t win at roulette?

In the long run, probably not. The house edge is designed so that the casino will, over the course of a day/week/month/year/decade, profit from roulette. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have a nice win from roulette. In fact, roulette is one of the games where you can win huge amounts very quickly. You can also lose a lot very quickly, but there aren’t many games in the casino (outside of poker-based games) that will pay you up to 35-1 for winning on one bet.

While the 35-1 isn’t the true price for hitting a single number, there is a great feeling when you do hit that number and your balance goes up a hell of a lot more than when you win one hand of blackjack. But that isn’t to say you can win at roulette? But I’d like to share a couple of stories that prove you can win, albeit in the short term.

First off, I had been playing a long session of poker at the casino and the game finally broke up at 6:00am. While walking through the casino, some of us stopped at the roulette table for a final gamble before the night is over (yes, a totally -EV, but we liked doing it). Now, one of the players, let’s call him Steve, walked up to the table, put a handful of nickels onto one number, because he “had a feeling”. Lo and behold, his number comes in and he adds around 1k to his poker winnings. Steve picks up another handful of nickels and does the same thing with another number, letting his last bet ride. Well, I’m sure you can guess by now that the same number comes in again and Steve adds another 1k to his stack I was flabbergasted, to be honest, as I’d never actually witnessed something like that before. Yes, I had seen guys hit numbers big, but they had other bets on the table.

In a similar vein, this happened recently. I was actually playing poker this time and there was a young drunk guy who was stuck a couple of hundred. He was donating money to the table like we were some sort of charity, which was always nice. However, he’d often go for a walk for 20 minutes at a time. He came back one time and told us how he hated Casino War, even though he’d won during his last session. So, the next time he vanished, he drops about 1k worth of blacks onto the table and tells us how lucky he was at roulette. Needless to say, the eyes of everyone at the table lit up.

Now, I could write about other times where I’ve seen players lose and I can tell you about times when players have broke even or had a small win. But these prove that you really can win at roulette, even if it is only in the short term. I do know that Steve had a great weekend with his roulette winnings and I also know our poker player dropped a very nice amount to the table by the end of the night.

I won’t say it’s the best game in the casino, not by a long shot, but it can be a lot of fun and it can get you a lot of spending money should you hit your number big.
