Caribbean Stud Poker is one of the newest innovations in casinos gambling. The game came about in the 1980s, but there are several ideas as to how it came about and more than one person wanting to take the credit for the game.
The first person wanting to take credit for the invention of Caribbean Stud Poker is noted poker author and poker player David Sklansky. He claims to have invented a game known as Casino Poker, which is fundamentally the same as Caribbean Stud Poker, albeit it with the dealer exposing two cards instead of just the one and also without the progressive jackpot feature which Caribbean Stud Poker players know and love today. Sklansky then claims he wasn’t able to patent the game, so it never came to fruition. Apparently he then sold the idea to one of his peers, who took the game to Aruba, where it became the Caribbean Stud Poker that is played in casinos worldwide.
Of course, that isn’t the only story about the invention of the game of Caribbean Stud Poker. No, that would be too easy. There is also the claim that Sklansky and the middle man were removed from the above story and that the game simply originated in Aruba, hence the name. After Aruba started to become a popular destination for cruises and people simply going for an exotic vacation, the game got brought back to North America, where it took off.
Finally, there is perhaps the most detailed account of the beginnings of Caribbean Stud Poker and it starts, as do a lot of modern gambling stories, in Las Vegas.
A man name James Suttle is supposed to have picked up the game from a fellow poker player in Binion’s in the mid-to-late ‘80s for a loan of $5,000. Suttle then allegedly sold this game idea to a friend of his who was a game developer and also owned a casino in Aruba. However, the game was still not able to take off in Aruba and was not able to give the casino the success it had been hoping for with this new and innovative game. But that apparently all changed when it was determined a progressive jackpot was needed to sweeten the deal for the players, since the game favoured the casino too much. The idea being that if players were able to win a huge amount of money, they would play regardless of the house odds. From then, the game went from strength to strength and is now played in casinos around the world.
So, as you can see, there are a few stories circulating out there about how the game of Caribbean Stud Poker came to fruition and the only thing that seems to be the same throughout is the time frame. It has to be said that for a relatively new casino game, its origins are a bit hazy. But what we do know for certain is that the game does have its roots in the Caribbean and that the progressive jackpot was a feature added at a later date to make the game more enticing. Whatever you choose to believe after that is up to you, but Suttle’s story holds a lot more weight than most.
