Baccarat: It’s the game you’re playing, where two hands face off against each other and the hand closest to 9 wins. However, it is also used to refer to a hand that is worth a total of 0.

Baccarat Banque: This is a variation of baccarat that is not seen much these days, especially online. However, this variation involves a player acting as the bank until the shoe of cards has been completely played, the player has gone bust, or they simply decide to stop playing.

Banker: This is the name of one of the hands you can bet on when playing baccarat. Any winning bets on this hand tend to pay 0.95-1, as the house will take a 5% commission. It doesn’t refer to a specific person playing baccarat, it is simply the name used to refer to a hand.

Banco: Spanish for “bank”; used in the name “Punto Banco”, a variation of baccarat regularly found at online casinos and at nearly all live casinos.

Chemin de Fer: The game that started it all, the original version of baccarat that originated in Europe several centuries ago. It is similar to Baccarat Banque in that a player acts as the bank, but the position of the bank changes depending on whether they continue to win.

Coup: The name given to a round of baccarat.

Croupier: The person at the casino in charge of dealing the cards at the baccarat/punto banco table.

Face Cards: Any card with a person on it, so Jacks, Queens and Kings.

House Advantage/Edge: This is the advantage the house has on any given bet at baccarat. Player and banker bets in baccarat have a small house edge of just over 1%, while the house edge on a tie bet is considerably greater.

Mini-Baccarat: Another name for the game found in most casinos, which tends to have lower limits and is a lot faster to play.

Natural: When the first two cards total an 8 or 9, this is a “natural” and they’re the desirable hands to get in baccarat.

Player: This is the name of the second hand in baccarat. If a baccarat player bets on this hand, the payout is 1-1 with no commission. It doesn’t refer to a specific person playing baccarat, it is simply the name used to refer to a hand.

Punto Banco: The most common variation of baccarat to be found online, as well as at most live casinos around the world. It is very similar to Chemin de Fer, although the player doesn’t have to ask for any cards and the casino will act as the banker, meaning no player has to use their own money to bankroll the game.

Shoe: This is where the cards are held before they are dealt. Some casinos use an automatic shoe, others use a traditional, non-electronic shoe. Some casinos also have a shoe with a card reader, so the card appears electronically on a screen at the table sometimes before the dealer has a chance to expose it.

Tie: When the banker hand and the player hand total the same. Usually pays 8-1, although at Bovada, the tie pays 9-1.
